The Santini Code returns home after four centuries

The Santini Code, parchment manuscript of civil and military machines derived from the studies of Francesco di Giorgio Martini, è un documento di straordinario valore per la storia dell’ingegneria e dell’architettura. Abbiamo avuto il privilegio di studiarlo anni fa con Marcella Peruzzi and to attribute it to Battista Comandino. It was reported in the last inventory of the library of the Dukes of Urbino, drawn up by the notary Francesco Scudacchi in the 1632, but was not among those transferred to the Vatican Apostolic Library in the 1657. Released from Ducal Palace of Urbino about four centuries ago, today it returns thanks to the acquisition of the National Gallery of the Marche, reconnecting a broken link with its original context. A particularly significant return, given that many of the Martinian machines depicted in the codex correspond to those sculpted in the so-called “war frieze” that decorated the current seat on the façade of the Palace. The panels have found a new display location inside the same building, in the over-lodges that overlook the courtyard of honor. We had reported on this codex in the Festschrift for Howard Burns, a great master who left us a few days ago. I am sure he would have welcomed the news of this return with joy.
