Public heritage: accessibility is a form of citizenship

Accessibility to our monumental heritage offers some of the most concrete answers to a still-too-unmet demand for citizenship. We need to learn from what already exists, precisely when it would seem easier to ensure accessibility in contemporary projects—as is already required for energy efficiency and structural safety—yet, often, some citizens are denied the experience of architecture. In the 14th installment of our special "Architecture and Inclusiveness" for Il Giornale dell'Architettura, we return to this crucial issue. This is precisely at a time when, paradoxically, accessibility in Milan is being widely discussed, but in economic terms and in terms of the social exclusion associated with new residential construction.
