URR – Urbino, Reuse and Restoration

Urbino, Ancona, Fano e Pesaro

The course offers a series of meetings and site visits dedicated to the transformation, reuse and conservation of ancient and post-ancient buildings and structures, with the aim of reflecting on the relationship between restoration and contemporary design in a long-term perspective. The course will be itinerant and will touch some symbolic places of the architectural heritage of the Marche region. In Urbino, the historical centre of reference, two days are planned dedicated to the analysis of emblematic cases: the Palazzo Ducale, Santa Chiara, the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista, the Montefeltro mausoleum in San Bernardino and the university buildings designed by Giancarlo De Carlo. The journey will continue with stops at Ancona, for the cathedral of San Ciriaco, in Fano, for the Vitruvian ruins of Colonia Iulia Fanestris, and in Pesaro, for the Villa Imperiale. Through lectures, excursions and guided tours with experts, students will be asked to delve into the themes of reuse, conservation of matter, urban restoration and contemporary challenges related to sustainability and safety.
