TheMecenate Auditorium, a semi-underground hall from the Augustan era, represents an important testimony to the residence of the famous patron on the Esquiline. Used for literary and political meetings, it still preserves its imposing stepped exedra, wall frescoes and original flooring. The intervention, promoted by the Capitoline Superintendency with funding PNRR, was entrusted to a Temporary Grouping of Professionals (RTP) – Zavarella-Nocera-Cristiano-Ricciardi-Iorio-Di Nisio, with our studio as a consultant for the Definitive and Executive Design.
Selective archaeological excavation
Due to spatial limitations and costs, the archaeological excavation will be concentrated on a portion of the exedra, excluding the construction of the ditch.
Roofing renovation
The existing structure, consisting of a truss system Polonceau, will be consolidated by installing new iron braces and a ventilated roof with wooden panels and recycled tiles. The historic ramp will be covered with a light and reversible solution.
Restoration of internal and external surfaces
The frescoes and stucco decorations will be subject to a conservative intervention, with non-invasive cleaning, consolidation and protection of the surfaces, preserving the historical patinas.
New ticket office and barrier-free access
The new volume will resume the shape of the pre-existing building with compatible materials and a natural ventilation system. It will include functional spaces for reception, bookshop and services, including an elevator for accessibility.
System adaptation and monitoring
Forced ventilation and environmental stabilization systems will be installed to preserve the decorated surfaces. Heating will be via modular electric radiant mats. An active electro-osmosis system will counteract rising humidity, supported by wireless sensors for climate monitoring.
This intervention preserves and enhances a unique monument, ensuring its usability and sustainability over time.
