The restoration of the facades of Palazzo Orsi Marconi

The façade, which rises elegantly along a porticoed stretch of the ancient Via San Vitale leading to the Due Torri, was erected around 1550 under the direction of Antonio Morandi known as Terribilia in order to conceal some pre-existing residential units, organised around a courtyard and directly accessible from the public street. A typically Bolognese habit of concealment where the construction of a new façade became an opportunity to simultaneously resolve the building's facing onto the street and its internal distribution. During 2007-2008, the external surfaces, heavily attacked by the deterioration of the sandstone that makes up the cornices of the windows, pilasters, stringcourses and battlements, were restored and consolidated with ethyl silicate until the stone was saturated. The stone portions that were severely detached were anchored using fibreglass pins and injection of an epoxy resin. In 2011, the crenellated flank on Via Bendetto XIV was restored and consolidated, with the timely repositioning of some of its battlements.
